Previous FBI Head James Comey Enters Innocent Plea to Charges of Lying Congress
Former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to congressional representatives and hindering a congressional proceeding.
Mr Comey's lawyer submitted the response representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would try to have the case dismissed for several reasons including that his defendant, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being singled out.
The former director was indicted soon after Trump urged his attorney general to move forward against him.
Legal Proceedings
During the hearing on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative informed the court they intended to file several legal requests to throw out the case before a court case, stating the government's case was vindictive and that a US attorney was unlawfully designated to take over the proceedings.
James Comey's case was first managed by Erik Siebert, who left his position under influence from Trump after his probe into another opponent - NY AG Letitia James - failed to initiate prosecution.
Courtroom Atmosphere
James Comey seemed in positive mood as he came into the court on mid-week, chatting with his legal team and making jokes. He was accompanied by his partner, Mrs Failor and child Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration recently fired.
Following the reading to the magistrate state his rights and the two counts against him in court on Wednesday, Mr Comey was inquired if he understood the accusations.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he told the court.
Background Context
The former director was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about several months into Trump's initial presidency as national leader. At the time, Mr Comey was directing an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between Russia and Trump's campaign.
During his tenure, the director triggered a backlash from Democrats when he stated just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating presidential nominee the candidate's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Clinton were never brought, resulting in negative feedback from Republicans as well.
Present Charges
Prosecutors claim Mr Comey lied to the legislature during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he provided false information to the legislative body by stating he had not approved someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to news outlets data about the agency probes.
Government lawyers also charge the defendant of "wrongfully trying to sway, obstruct and impede" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.
Personal Comments
In a video the former director posted to his Instagram after he was charged, he stated he was not guilty and charged Trump of behaving like a "dictator".
"My family and I have been aware for considerable time that there are consequences to opposing the former president," he commented. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I'm innocent," he added. "Therefore proceed with a trial."
These allegations against Mr Comey surfaced after the former president shared on social media insisting on his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, prosecute Mr Comey and other people.
