{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with F1 track officials
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he barely escaped a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals darted across the track right in his path
The alarming incident happened on the third lap when marshals were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to swap his damaged front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Moments later, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was observing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two dudes dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Clearly there's been a failure in communication somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track safety personnel can be allowed to just sprint across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm sure we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"
Official Investigation Underway
F1's overseeing organization, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the situation
"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was informed that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the FIA
"On lap three, marshals were alerted and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once all cars had passed"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the instructions to dispatch personnel were rescinded and a caution signal was raised in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what occurred subsequent to that time"
