Heroic Train Employee Receives Life-Threatening Injuries Amid Multiple Stabbing Incident on Express Train
A courageous train employee who stepped in to protect travelers during a mass stabbing incident on a express train has sustained critical injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.
Details of the Frightening Event
Surveillance footage reportedly shows the staff member attempting to halt the assailant as the train journeyed between Peterborough and another station in Cambridgeshire. Bystanders described a frightening 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with injured passengers running through compartments.
The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in detention for interrogation. Police announced a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
Crisis Response and Consequences
The event on Saturday night led to 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unscheduled stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several individuals have since been released from medical care.
A bystander recorded the individual waving a big knife and being shot with a stun device as he confronted police on the station. He was reportedly heard yelling, "Kill me, kill me."
“This awful event has created broad consequences. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the brave member of train personnel whose relatives are being supported by specialist officers,” stated a senior law enforcement official.
Union Response and Calls for Measures
Train unions were quick to praise staff and demand increased action. A union leader stated he would be “requesting immediate meetings with authorities, train companies and law enforcement to ensure that we have the strongest available support, resources and effective protocols in operation”.
Another association representative encouraged the train operator and authorities “to act swiftly to review safety, to support the impacted employees, and to make sure that no incident like this occurs again”.
Driver Commended for Rapid Action
The train driver who halted the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been praised by union officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“He didn’t halt the train in the center of two stations where it’s obviously difficult for the first responders to access, but he continued traveling until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost already there,” stated a union official.
Additional Information
Police stated they got the first distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An observer recounted initially thinking if the event was a Halloween joke, but quickly realized from individuals' expressions that it was real.
Police have stated there is nothing to indicate the incident was a terrorist attack and have asked the public to provide with any additional information.
Train operations on the affected route are expected to have delays until Monday, with travelers recommended to postpone their journeys where possible.
Individuals with details that could help the investigation are encouraged to reach police by sending a message a specific number with a reference code.
