‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s path from rehabilitation to success with Athletic

Whenhe initial occasion the Athletic striker competed in England, an young playing for the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in fall 2015, he scored. The second time he took the field in British turf, against Sunderland two months later, he netted. The third time, against Manchester City soon after, indeed, he scored again. When he returned to Manchester to play against the Red Devils at Leigh Sports Village in 2017, he scored again. An excellent finish, as well. “Truly,” he says, “it ranks among my finest I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what they had to do: he was replaced.

“I got well angry,” the attacker says, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They didn’t let me play the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, goals were flowing, speculation was rife, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, the usual talk. It’s unclear the validity, but supposing an offer came, I’d have chosen to stay at Bilbao. I’m fortunate to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the facility, the Basque Country, the morning session is about to start; after it, the short journey to Loiu and a further journey to Britain, this time to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Just saying those two words lights him up. It has become a difficult season for Athletic, due in part to the demands of competing at this level. Losing in stoppage time in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in Europe. Yet, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and those that lie ahead, and a sense of thankful reflection from him.

In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a final four contender in Europe, stopped at the gates a final at home by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge up the Nervión estuary accompanied by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in a long wait. He’s now the top goal-getter in the Champions League, where they are distinctive and debuting in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.

He considered it challenging enough just to make the first team and his assessment was correct. As the child of the ex-La Real star his father and a regular attendee at the opposition side, Guruzeta is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that nurtured the coach, Xabi Alonso and the tactician. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after his top-level debut in that summer, he experienced a ACL injury, being released, a demotion and a return before he could earn his place, coming back aged 26 to enjoy the highlights of their lives.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the European competition.

“You go into the academy not expecting to reach the senior squad but with every stage you advance through you’re still there and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his bow and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances there and I suffered the ACL injury.

“A severe disappointment but I reflect on it as a turning point because it shifted the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it helps. You cultivate routines previously lacking. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I did the sessions and then return home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. Every small aspect: perform them.

“Among professionals you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles repeatedly. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”

Minutes are crucial. The striker moved emotionally in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he scored three times in forty appearances. At Amorebieta in the following period, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. If you turn it round, dedication, confidence, and when eventually they need someone for your role, recall is possible. You have to be ready. When the opportunity came, an aspiration fulfilled. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

No wonder he says this is to be enjoyed. All the more so after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was involved suffering. From top scorer with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
